Prayer Quilt Ministry

St. Patrick’s Prayer Quilt Ministry is a member of Prayers & Squares, an interfaith outreach organization that combines the gift of prayer with the gift of a hand-tied quilt. Unlike many other groups that make quilts for charitable causes, the purpose of Prayers & Squares is not to make and distribute quilts, but to promote prayer through the use of quilts. Our motto is: “It’s not about the quilt; it’s all about the prayers.”

The idea behind these prayer quilts is simple. After the quilt is made, a heavy thread is used to take stitches through the quilt layers and the ends are left free to be tied with a square knot. As each knot is tied, a silent prayer is said for someone in special need who then receives the finished quilt. This is not just a gift of a quilt, it is a gift of love and prayer. It is a statement of faith in God and in His power to comfort, strengthen and heal. There is never a charge for a prayer quilt.

Through St. Patrick’s Prayer Quilt Ministry literally hundreds of quilts have been distributed, each a special gift of love. They have been made for adults and children dealing with serious illness, pending surgery or personal crisis; for many reasons, but each for someone in special need of prayer.

If you are a member of St. Patrick’s, and know someone who would be blessed to receive a prayer quilt, you may sponsor one for them. As sponsor, you would first contact them to see if they are willing to receive a quilt and to ask what prayer requests they have. You would then complete a quilt request form, be with us on the day the quilt is tied and deliver or ship the quilt to the recipient.

Sewing experience is not required to participate in this ministry – there is a job for everyone and donations to purchase supplies are always appreciated. We meet in the parish hall quilt room every Thursday at 2:00 p.m.
